The Nordic Africa Podcast: Women’s Day special - African women in politics

Date • 7 Mar 2023
A Women's Day special of the Nordic Africa Podcast on African women in politics.
There have been some gains in the political realm for women politicians in Africa shown not least in the Kenya elections last fall and in the 2020 Ghana elections, where the first-ever women running mate was appointed for one of the two main presidential candidates. Although neither Martha Karua nor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang ended up as the first women deputy president in Kenya and Ghana respectively, their appointments as running mates are still considered by many as a step forward for women in politics. But many challenges remain for women entering the political realm. In this podcast we discuss these issues with:
- Diana Højlund Madsen: Senior researcher at the Nordic Africa Institute
- Mandiedza Parichi lecturer in Midlands University in Gweru
- Shilla Sintoyia Memusi, Policy Analyst
