Volatile and declining aid flows have increased the pressure to quickly mobilise more domestic tax revenue to fund development. However, African governments face significant challenges in raising tax revenue due to the narrow tax base.
A critical question for African governments is how to reform tax systems without discouraging economic growth, investment and job creation.
This webinar is divided into two parts, each addressing a distinct dimension of tax revenue mobilisation in Africa.
The first part discusses how African governments and development partners can enhance tax revenue mobilisation in contexts of institutional and technological changes. How can African tax authorities leverage digitalisation to improve the efficiency of the tax system?
The second part discusses how the tax burden and the fairness of the tax system affect tax compliance among Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (SMEs) in Ghana. Which factors enhance tax compliance among SMEs? How is the tax burden distributed across firm size and formality/informality status?
Together, these discussions address the broader challenges of increasing tax revenue in African countries, drawing on Ghana's experience to offer lessons for building fair, effective and sustainable tax systems across Africa.
