History

The Swedish Media Database (SMDB), (Former The Swedish National Archive for Recorded Sound and Moving Images (Statens Ljud- och Bildarkiv), SLBA), is a search service for the audiovisual collections at the National Library of Sweden (KB). The database contains information about TV, radio, video, movies presented in theaters, CDs, and multimedia.

The SMDB covers most Swedish broadcasts and publications since 1979, but also contains older material. You can find information about almost 8 million recorded hours in the SMDB.

The SMDB is only available in Swedish. If you have any questions about the National Library’s audiovisual collections and how to search, contact our research service.

Access

Services to the public include enquiries, catalogues (some of them here) and a reference library. Music recordings (radio, records, CDs etc) are also available for listening on request. However, the main part of the collections is available only for research, due to copyright restrictions. Researchers can study copies of the archive material on site in Stockholm or at libraries in around 30 towns across Sweden.
