Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency, Sida

History

Sida is the Swedish Government aid agency since 1 July, 1995. Its predecessor SIDA (Swedish International Development Authority) existed between 1 July, 1965 and 30 June, 1995.

SIDA established its own field offices within the Swedish embassies in countries with which Sweden had extensive development cooperation. The offices were called Development Cooperation Offices, DCOs. When SIDA became Sida these separate offices were integrated into the embassies and their archives for the period 1965-1995 were sent to SIDA in Stockholm. These archives are now being organized, weeded out and registered before they will be sent to the Swedish National Archives for permanent keeping.

The DCOs in the “Front Line States” of Southern Africa also handled the Swedish support to the liberation movements of Southern Africa while they operated in exile. The registers of Angola’s and Botswana’s DCO files on Swedish cooperation with the liberation movements have been translated into English and made available for research through the Nordic Africa Institute in Uppsala, Sweden. Registers of the archives of the remaining DCOs in the “Front Line States” will be published in the same way as soon as they have been finalized.

It should be mentioned that some 70-80% of the documents are in the Swedish language; the rest mainly in English, but also in Portugese. It may therefore be advisable for non-Swedish speaking researchers to establish contact and cooperation with Swedish researchers or relevant Swedish institutions in order to facilitate translation.
