Church of Sweden Mission, CSM
History
The Church of Sweden Mission (CSM) was founded in 1874 and has since then been the extended arm of the Church of Sweden in its mission in Africa, Asia, and Latin America. The first missionaries of the Church of Sweden Mission went to South Africa and India in 1876. They were soon followed by others who set out for Zimbabwe, China and Tanzania.
The churches that were built up with the help of the Church of Sweden Mission at the beginning of this century are now independent and have their own leadership. (http://www.svenskakyrkan.se/skm/skmeng.htm#history)
In the following series the most relevant documents concerning the liberation struggle of Namibia and South Africa are to be found. The codes refer to the CSM archive catalog. Numbers attached to the code show the volume number.
The Church of Sweden Mission Archive is not completely cataloged. The diary is marked up with volume and diary number and keeps the same number throughout the years between 1970 and 1988. From 1989 there is an organizational change. After being a manual diary sorted by items it is now computer-based and sorted by outgoing and received documents. It is possible to search in this data-based diary even though it has not been used since the beginning of 1995 and has been replaced by another system. There are 74 volumes of received documents for 1989 and 14 volumes of outgoing documents. For 1990 there are 77 volumes of received documents and 14 volumes of outgoing documents.
The most relevant information concerning the independence struggle of South Africa is to be find in diary number 6141 Rasrelationer (Race relations). For Namibia this information has diary number 6011. Each of the different organizations involved has a number.
