Bertil Högberg's private collection (on Bread and Fishes material)

History

Bertil Högberg was active (full time) on leading positions within the Bread and Fishes from 1974 to 1977 and from 1979 –1981. Thereafter he was treasurer in the board until 1990. Responsible for contacts with the liberation movements and the study and information activities. From 1973, before joining the Bread and Fishes and until 1976, he was the the coordinator of the local ecumenical U-week (Development education week) where South Africa became one of the campaign themes.

Active within the Africa groups (AGIS) since 1976. Locally active in the Västerås, Stockholm and Uppsala Africa Groups. In the national board most of the time from 1977 to 1990. He worked part time in the AGIS office 1978-1979 and was the chairperson in two periods in beginning of the 1980s. Chairperson of ISAK 1980 and 1982. He worked part time at the SWAPO mission in Stockholm from 1977 to 1979. Högberg initiated and was the first coordinator of the medical Aid project for SWAPO, a cooperation between the Bread and Fishes and the Africa Groups with support from ISAK. Was from 1982 – 1990 employed as a teacher at the Sigtuna Folk College and there involved in three exchange and campaign programmes with Church of Sweden youth called “Be a Comrade with Zimbabwe” and “Be a Comrade with Southern Africa”. From the start in 1984 he was involved in the secret support by the Africa groups to organisations involved in the resistance in South Africa and Namibia. Coordinated the Africa Group activities in Namibia after independence 1990-92 and in South Africa 2001. Professionally a sociologist and teacher at folk colleges, and is now working as independent consultant.

The archives contain documents, interviews and photos from travels and contacts with liberation movements and activists in South Africa 1976 and Namibia 1976 and 77, Zimbabwe 1976, 1982, 1985, 1986, Angola and Mozambique 1979, Zambia 1976, 1983 and Tanzania (ANC) 1979 and 1983.
