Uganda: Shame keeps pregnant teens out of school

“My fellow pupils were disturbing me. I decided to leave school”, says 17-year old Sharron (not her real name) in Uganda’s Mbarara district.

In Uganda, pregnant girls often drop out of school due to the stigmatization connected to having children out of marriage. There are also practical barriers. While there are guidelines for schools to have a designated place where young mothers can breastfeed, resources are often lacking, explains Kamagushi Jovia, local probation officer in Mbarara district.
