Welcome to this public seminar at The University of Iceland in Reykjavík.

Location: Edda building, Conference Room 103

Time: Thursday 27 November 2025, 8:45-10:30

The past two decades have seen growing global attention towards the African continent as a geopolitical player and a key strategic partner, and renewed calls from African actors for genuine decolonization and increased influence. Across the continent, a new generation has come of age amid rapid population growth, expanding labour markets,
widening political participation, and a growing sense of continental agency, seen in the African Union’s global diplomacy, the African Continental Free Trade Area, and Africa’s coordinated engagement with climate, trade, and technology agendas.

At the same time, inequality, youth unemployment, conflict, democratic backsliding,
rapid urbanization, and climate vulnerability remain pressing challenges. The coming
two decades will define how demographic potential, governance, and mobility interact
to shape Africa’s societal trajectory as a world region, and the role Africa plays on the
world stage.

This panel invites five researchers with diverse experiences in African studies to reflect
on illustrative examples from their own work that speak to some of the trends and
challenges facing Africa as a world region. These include issues relating to population
growth, climate adaptation, democratic governance, youth activism, and migration.

The discussion will be anchored in evidence and statistics, and invite reflection on key
challenges facing African states and regions’ potential, and on how these trends may
influence the Nordic-Africa relationship.
