This project attempts to investigate and understand the new forms of mobilization for civic engagement and political participation on social media, with a specific focus on the under-explored platform - TikTok.

Focus area

This project thematic focus areas are social media and democracy. The geographical focus includes Kenya, Nigeria and Ghana.

Key objectives

The overall objective is to understand how TikTok might be contributing to the formation of new political identities in African politics and democracy. Some specific objectives is to understand how Tiktok contributed to increased political mobilization and civic engagement during Kenya’s 2024 Finance Bill protests.
