Regional Trade Agreements, Trade Flows and Value Chains in Africa: Lessons to AfCFTA

Started • 01 August 2024

This study will examine the effects of African Regional Trade Agreements (RTAs) on trade flows and value chains and will attempt to derive policy lessons for African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).

Key objectives

The key objectives are analyzing trade flows (trade created and diverted) in African RTAs both at the aggregate and disaggregated flows; investigating the role of RTAs on Africa’s regional and global value chain participation at aggregate and disaggregate level; assessing the existence of phasing-in effects (gradual development) of African RTAs; and finally driving policy lessons for AfCFTA by looking into the characteristics and outcomes of the RTAs.
