Smallholder farmers – the backbone of Ethiopian agriculture
Water dams and irrigation schemes are on their way in the Lake Tana region in Ethiopia, but what’s the current situation like for the region’s smallholder farmers? This question was raised at an NAI workshop in the region’s main city Bahir Dar.
“Around 80 per cent of the farmers in Ethiopia are smallholders. Thus, they are the backbone of all agriculture.” NAI researcher Terje Oestigaard says.
