The session is part of the series Africa’s COVID-19 response and the Extractives Sector that is critically examining the impact of and responses to the pandemic on Africa’s extractives sector, particularly minerals, oil and gas.

This installment of the webinar will focus on mining and its role in supporting economic recovery and growth on the continent.

  • Mr Antonio M.A. Pedro, Director, UNECA Sub-Regional Office for Central Africa (SRO-CA) Yaoundé, Cameroon

Antonio Pedro is a mineral exploration geologist with more than 30 years of broad experience in Africa’s extractives sector. While at UNECA’s Headquarters in Addis Ababa, he spearheaded the formulation of the Africa Mining Vision (AMV) which was adopted by the African Union Summit of Heads of State and Government in February 2009. He is a member of the International Resources Panel (IRP), Leadership Council of the UN Sustainable Development Solutions Network (SDSN), and Co-Chair of the Thematic Network on the Good Governance of Extractive and Land Resources.

  • Dr Kwasi Ampofo, Metals Analyst, BloombergNEF

Kwasi Ampofo is a Metals and Mining Analyst at BloombergNEF based in London. His research covers battery metals, the digitalisation of the mining industry and renewable energy investments in emerging markets. Prior to BloombergNEF, he was a mining engineer at Anglo American and a management consultant at Nous Group in Australia. He completed his PhD in Mineral Economics at the University of Queensland, Australia.
