Seminar

Where is South Africa Heading After the Elections?

Time • 28 May 2019 18:00 - 19:30
Place • ABF-huset, Sveavägen 41, Stockholm

For the sixth time since the end of apartheid in 1994, general elections will be held in South Africa on 8 May 2019 to elect a new National Assembly and provincial legislatures. The elections, which follow years of conflict and challenges of political as well as economic nature, will determine who will become the next president of South Africa.

The seminar is arranged by the Nordic Africa Institute in collaboration with ABF and Föreningen för utvecklingsfrågor (FUF).

The seminar is open for all and free of charge.

Incumbent president Cyril Ramaphosa will lead the ruling African National Congress, with the party attempting to retain its majority status and secure Ramaphosa a full term in office as president. His predecessor, Jacob Zuma, resigned from office on 14 February 2018 and was already ineligible for a third term in office as the constitution limits a president to serve a maximum of two five-year terms.

Föreningen för utvecklingsfrågor (FUF) and the Nordic Africa Institute (NAI) invites you to a panel discussion on where South Africa is heading in the coming years after these elections. The discussion will be moderated by Lennart Wohlgemuth, FUF. Welcome!
