“I have been interested in football since I was a teenager. Every Saturday my father and I would watch televised matches from the English first division. That was before I discovered African football. My husband and I have visited five African Cup of Nations tournaments: in 2006, 2008, 2010, 2012 and 2013. African teams seem to have preserved a lot of the joy and playfulness of the original game, something which many European sides have lost along the way. I also love that the African Cup usually is full of surprises. I mean, who had expected Zambia to walk away with the trophy in 2012? I have great memories from that year’s tournament. In Malabo (capital of Equatorial Guinea) my husband and I stayed in the same hotel as the Ivorian national team. There were few other guests in the hotel. We would run into players in the lobby and elevators. I had my picture taken with Didier Drogba and Yaya Touré. They were both really nice, like ordinary guys.”
