Cristiano Lanzano is a social anthropologist with a background in political science and development studies. He is an expert on the extractive sector and mining, natural resources and conservation, rural-urban continuum, anthropology of development and youth and urban culture.

Cristiano Lanzano has worked predominantly in West Africa (Senegal, Burkina Faso, Guinea Conakry). His doctoral research investigated globalization, urban culture and youth in Dakar (Senegal). He then worked on the social and political dimensions of forest conservation and natural resources management in Burkina Faso.

Since 2012, he focuses on the extractive sector in West Africa, and more particularly on artisanal and small-scale gold mining: he is interested in the practical governance of mineral production across the formal/informal divide, in the organization of work in mining camps, and in socio-technical change.
