40 million+ mobile phone subscribers are registered in Tanzania, a country with a population of 57 million. Mobile phone use in Africa has exploded over the past decade. On a continent where the vast majority of people previously lacked access to telecommunications due to inadequate landline infrastructure, the mobile phone has brought fundamental change.

It has created new opportunities for activism, social participation and economic empowerment, not least for women and people in rural areas.
