Africanists gathering in Uppsala

Date • 19 Sep 2018

This week, the Nordic Africa Institute welcomes nearly 300 Africanists from all over the world to the Nordic Africa Days, a three-day conference in Uppsala aimed at expanding the discourse on Africa. The 2018 theme is African Mobilities – reshaping narratives and practices of circulation and exchange.

The Nordic Africa Days conference, which has been organized by the Nordic Africa Institute since 1997, has grown threefold in the last decade alone, and now attracts hundreds of scholars from more than 40 countries.

NAD2018 welcomes two keynote speakers, Cameroonian social activist, entrepreneur and politician Ms Kah Walla, and fellow Cameroonian Francis Nyamnjoh, novelist, playwright and researcher.

Professor Nymanjoh will also participate in the second of two roundtables, Decolonisation and Social Media, which will draw on the #RhodesMustFall movement in South Africa.

The first roundtable, African Migration and the Mediterranean Crisis, focusing on Africa-to-Europe migration, will benefit from the insights of a representative of the Moroccan government, which will host the Intergovernmental Conference to Adopt the Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration in December this year.
