Land acquisitions – a rush for water?

The high demand for agricultural land in poor countries has important consequences also for water use. During the World Water Week in Stockholm, late August 2012, it was highlighted that it is less a matter whether large scale land and water acquisitions are good or bad, but rather how they are carried out.
− It can be a good thing for African countries since it means investments and job opportunities. At the same time there are also great risks. The biggest risk is that local people get excluded, says NAI researcher Mats Hårsmar.
