Informal waste sector in Nigeria
They live on waste dumps and they do the job no-one wants to do. Picking, then sorting and reusing waste makes a living for thousands of people in Abuja, capital of Nigeria. NAI researcher Onyanta Adama led a workshop on 21 August in Abuja on informal waste management.
− Those who engage in informal solid waste management do so for economic reasons. But they also recover huge quantities of waste and thus reduce the amount that goes for final disposal. This saves money for the government and of course has positive implications on environment, says Onyanta Adama.
