Charles Taylor sentenced to 50 years
Comment by NAI-researcher Mats Utas
Erstwhile NPFL (National Patriotic Front of Liberia) rebel leader and President Charles Taylor has been sentenced to 50 years in prison by the Special Court for Sierra Leone. The verdict will further stabilize Liberia and probably we will see some shifts in the political landscape over the next few years. Although Taylor is still very popular amongst many Liberians this sentence will effectively put an end to the pro-Taylor faction. That Charles Taylor has been sentenced for aiding and abetting war crimes in Sierra Leone and not for the severe war crimes he is responsible for in his home country Liberia is sad, however a legal process concerning the Liberian civil wars has so far been a political impossibility as many within the political and economic elite of the country would have to be included.
