"What to do with military men and women when war is over, has been a recurring theme since I first became a researcher. One thing that has surprised me is the capability of war-torn societies to not only absorb and integrate thousands of ex-soldiers, but also incorporate former generals and warlords into the political system. Another is how differently individual ex-fighters deal with their experiences from the past war. While some seek to hide their former military identity and blend in, others boast and exaggerate the role they played during the war. Both approaches constitute rational survival strategies, which help ex-combatants navigate in what are often turbulent and poor post-war societies.”
